Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Genie-compatible cable and drum replacements across Fort Lauderdale, with most jobs running $130 – $250 installed depending on your model and whether one or both sides need work. If the cable has snapped or the drum has warped, we can usually get a technician out the same day to assess it and get the door safe and working again. Most owners discover this failure the hard way: the door jerks sideways on the track, one side drops lower than the other, or a frayed cable lets go with a loud snap and the door refuses to move at all. When a Genie cable or drum fails, the door won’t balance, and forcing it open by hand or with the opener can bend the track, damage panels, or send a drum spinning off the torsion tube.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

This covers the full range of Genie residential doors, from the older screw-drive opener era doors through the current IntelliG and Mach Force series, including the 1000, 1200, 2200, and 3020 series openers paired with standard 7-foot and 8-foot doors. The cable and drum aren’t tied to the opener model, though. They’re matched to the door’s spring system and tube diameter, which is why identifying the right replacement part starts with measuring the existing drum and cable length, not reading the opener nameplate. On most Genie residential doors, the drum is a die-cast aluminum or nylon unit with a 4-inch to 5-inch outer diameter and a 1-inch bore, though some heavier doors use a stepped or tapered drum. If you’re not sure which you have, a photo of the drum and the cable end taken from the side of the track gives us what we need to bring the right part on the first visit. Genie OEM parts are well made, but on doors older than ten years we often recommend quality aftermarket equivalents that match the original dimensions at a better price, and we’ll show you the difference before we install anything.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • Fraying or unraveling cables. The steel strands start to separate near the drum or the bottom bracket. This is the earliest warning sign and means the cable is past its service life. When the strands pile up at the drum edge, they’ll bind and snap soon after.
  • A door that drops faster on one side. When one drum has excessive wear or a cable has stretched, that side runs looser. The door still closes, but it’s visibly out of level, which loads the hinges and rollers unevenly.
  • A pop or snap while the door moves. A cable that lets go under tension makes an unmistakable sound. Afterward the door may hang crooked, and the remaining cable is doing double duty and won’t hold for long.
  • Gaps or overlap in the cable wrap on the drum. If you look up at the drum while the door is closed, the cable should sit in a tight, even coil. Overlapping wraps mean the drum groove is worn or the cable has lost tension.
  • The opener shuts off or reverses mid-travel. Genie openers with force-sensing protection will stop when they detect the uneven load of a failing cable or drum. The opener isn’t the problem. The door hardware is.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Fort Lauderdale, a single Genie cable and drum replacement typically runs $130 – $250 installed. That includes the new cable and drum for one side, removal of the old parts, lubrication of the torsion tube and bearings, and rebalancing the door so both sides lift evenly. If both sides need replacement, which is common on doors over 12 years old because the parts wear at the same rate, expect the higher end of that range. The price you’re quoted is the price you’ll pay because we write it down and hand it to you before we touch a tool. And the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that cable or drum fails within a year, we return and correct it at no charge, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest version. You can safely check a few things yourself: look at the cables for visible fraying, raise the door a few feet and eyeball whether it’s level, and listen for popping or binding while it moves. But replacing a Genie cable means working with the torsion assembly, and that’s where we stop every DIY conversation. The cable is under constant load from the torsion spring, the drum sits on a tube carrying that tension, and the wrong move at the wrong moment turns a $150 job into a hospital visit or a door that comes down off its tracks. The winding and unwinding procedure is not something to learn from a video, and we’ve been called to fix the aftermath more times than we can count. If you’ve spotted a frayed cable or a door that’s dropped to one side, call (754) 354-7491 and one of our background-checked, uniformed technicians will come out, diagnose it, and give you a written price before anything gets removed.
